President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate cancellation of fuel allowances for all political appointees as part of broader efforts to cut down on public spending.
The directive, issued on Tuesday, July 15, was contained in an official statement from the presidency and signed by Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu. It forms part of the government’s ongoing fiscal discipline measures amid mounting economic pressures.
According to the statement, the president’s decision reflects a commitment to ensuring that leadership shares in the sacrifices being demanded of the general public.
This latest directive follows a string of austerity policies, including a reduction in the size of government through fewer ministerial appointments, cuts in presidential staff, and the cancellation of satellite TV subscriptions for offices at the Jubilee House and other government institutions.
The announcement also comes just a day before the rollout of a controversial GHS1.00 levy on every litre of fuel at the pump. Government has explained that proceeds from the levy will be used to fund fuel procurement for power generation under the Ministry of Energy.
The Mahama administration says the measures are necessary to prioritize spending in critical sectors while restoring economic stability.
