Mustapha Hamid, 6 Others To Appear Before High Court On July 23

Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, along with six others, is expected to appear before Criminal Division 3 of the High Court on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, to respond to serious corruption-related charges leveled against them by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The OSP confirmed the upcoming court date in a statement shared via its official Facebook page on Thursday, July 17.

According to the OSP, Dr. Abdul-Hamid is alleged to have masterminded an extortion and money laundering scheme that siphoned GHS280,516,127.19 from the petroleum sector between 2022 and December 2024. Of that amount, GHS24 million was reportedly paid directly to the former CEO, with the remainder allegedly funneled through intermediaries and laundered using three companies.

The six other individuals named in the case include:

Jacob Kwamina Amuah, Wendy Newman, Albert Ankrah, Isaac Mensah, Bright Bernako-Mensah, and Kwaku Aboagye Acquah. All seven are currently on inquiry bail as investigations continue.

However, in a strongly worded statement, Dr. Abdul-Hamid’s legal team pushed back against the allegations, insisting that no official charges have been served as of July 17, nor has he been formally arraigned. The lawyers argue that the accusations are inconsistent, unsubstantiated, and lack a credible legal basis.

They also pointed out discrepancies in the OSP’s narrative, citing an earlier February 2025 press conference in which the Special Prosecutor claimed Dr. Abdul-Hamid had embezzled GHS1.3 billion from the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF) and breached procurement laws.

As the nation awaits further legal proceedings, the case is expected to attract intense public and political scrutiny, given its potential implications for transparency and accountability within Ghana’s energy sector
