Liverpool To “Immortalize” Diogo Jota’s No. 20 Jersey

The No. 20 jersey of Diogo Jota, the Portuguese forward who died in a vehicle crash in Spain on Thursday, will be “immortalized” by Liverpool, the club announced in a statement.

“The No. 20 will be rightly immortalised for his contributions as part of Liverpool’s 2024-25 title-winners, the club’s 20th, with his trademark shimmy and strike in front of the Kop to seal victory in April’s Merseyside derby a poignant last goal of his life,” the club announced in a tribute to its former player.

The football community and beyond have come together to pay tribute to Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 26, who tragically lost his life in the disaster.

Born in Porto, Jota started his playing career through Paços de Ferreira’s junior setup before going to Atlético Madrid in 2016, followed by a loan spell at Porto and a trade to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

With Jurgen Klopp at the helm and Arne Slot at the helm of Liverpool, he enjoyed his finest professional season, during which the club won the FA Cup and League Cup.

In 2019 and 2025, he helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League.

No player’s jersey number has ever been retired by Liverpool and fans have demanded that the club extend an exception to the late forward’s talented status, but details regarding the tribute to Jota remain murky.
