Kuami Eugene Responds To Allegations Of Song Theft

Ghanaian music icon, Kuami Eugene has spoken to allegations about how he samples music from other musicians which music enthusiasts referred to as song theft.

In an interview on Hitz FM, the ‘Monica‘ hitmaker refuted misconceptions surrounding his creative process, starting categorically that he does not steal songs.

He stressed that as a musician, his inspiration stems from a variety of sources, often using special elements to develop his unique sound.

“Every artiste takes influences from different places,” he explained, highlighting the collaborative nature of the music industry.

Citing iconic artistes like Michael Jackson and popular Nigerian musicians such as Davido and Wizkid, the renowned Highlife star argued in favour of the common practice of borrowing lyrics or melodies.

“There’s nothing wrong with taking a line or two and modifying it to fit my style,” he stated confidently.

“It’s a part of how we create music, and it’s something that professional musicians do all the time,” he added.

Despite providing his explanation, Kuami Eugene voiced his frustration regarding the increased scrutiny he endures compared to other artists.

“I feel like many artists can get away with it, but for me, it’s like every time I release a hit that includes a line reminiscent of another artist’s work, I’m criticized…It’s disheartening because I put a lot of effort into making my music original while drawing inspiration.” He opined
