John Mahama Becomes Ghana’s New President

At Accra’s renowned Independence Square, Ghana’s newly elected president, John Dramani Mahama, took the oath of office today.

A historic turning point in the country’s democratic development was marked by the attendance of thousands of civilians, 21 heads of state, and foreign dignitaries at the highly anticipated event.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo administered the oath of office to Mahama, head of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and he vowed to serve the Ghanaian people and protect the Constitution.

He received a broad mandate from the electorate and a strong vote of respect for his leadership in the December 7 elections, which led to his resounding victory.

The occasion also marked the official swearing-in of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first female vice president, marking a significant historical milestone.
