A 26-year-old British man has died after falling from Spain’s tallest bridge while attempting to climb one of its pylons.
The incident occurred on the Castilla-La Mancha bridge, which spans the River Tagus near Talavera de la Reina in central Spain, as reported by the town council on Sunday.
Local councillor Macarena Muñoz stated that the man was with another British companion, aged 24.
She mentioned that they had traveled to Talavera to climb the bridge and create content for social media.
Muñoz emphasized that climbing the bridge is strictly prohibited and that this has been reiterated several times, expressing her sorrow over the tragic incident.
According to the statement, the body of the unnamed man has been transported to a funeral home by local authorities.
The cable-stayed bridge, completed in 2010, stands 180 meters (591 feet) tall, with a main span of 318 meters (1,043 feet).
The British man’s death is not an isolated incident, as many have lost their lives while seeking social media content in recent years.
In December 2020, a woman in Australia fell to her death while taking a photo at Boroka Lookout, an overhang at Grampians National Park in Victoria, as reported by CNN affiliate Nine News.
ALso, in November 2019, a French tourist died after slipping from a waterfall in Thailand while attempting to take a selfie.
The 33-year-old man fell from the Na Mueang 2 waterfall on Koh Samui, the same location where a Spanish tourist had died in a fall just a few months earlier, according to the AFP news agency.
