The Ministry of Education has issued a firm directive for the final sitting of Ghana’s current teacher licensure examination, setting a strict deadline of August 30, 2025.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu made the announcement during the inauguration of the newly constituted board of the National Teaching Council (NTC), tasking the Council and its Registrar with immediately finalising arrangements for the last batch of candidates.
“The last of it must be concluded not later than 30th August. If there is a last opportunity for those who sat and couldn’t make it, that process should not travel beyond 30th August,” the Minister emphasized. “You are to work with the registrar, get us a firm date, and we’ll put that off.”
The move is part of a broader reform initiative to transition from the existing teacher licensure exam system to a more holistic assessment framework. According to the Minister, the new model will shift focus from standardised testing to a blend of academic training and practical fieldwork, designed to better reflect the realities of teaching in Ghanaian classrooms.
Minister Iddrisu commended the NTC board for its progressive proposals and urged them to ensure a smooth phase-out of the current exam regime while accelerating preparations for the new framework.
The decision brings clarity to the future of teacher certification in Ghana, especially for candidates who have previously failed the exam and are hoping for a final opportunity to qualify under the existing system.
