Nigeria’s AFCON Qualifier Showdown Against Libya In Doubt As Players Left Stranded At Airport

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have pulled out of Tuesday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya.

This comes against the backdrop of a 12-hour ordeal at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya, where the national team was stranded on Sunday afternoon.

The Nigerian delegation, on their way to Benghazi for a critical qualifier, faced a dangerous mid-flight diversion when their chartered plane was rerouted to Al Abraq, a small airport usually used for hajj operations.

Nigeria players stranded at Libya airport.

The players and the technical team, as a result of the unexpected diversion, were stranded without any help from the Libyan Football Federation, which was not able to provide transportation.

Captain of the side, William Troost-Ekong, condemned how the senior national team was treated after they were stranded for more than 12 hours at the airport.
