First Deputy Speaker Expresses Disappointment In 8th Parliament For Low Legislative Output

Joe Osei-Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, popularly known as Joe Wise, has voiced his disappointment regarding the behaviuor of the members of the 8th Parliament of Ghana.

According to him, the current parliamentary session fails to prioritise its main mandates, lacks focus, and is riddled with controversies.

He stated that the 8th Parliament has not met the legislative standards established by previous sessions and has ultimately fallen short of expectations.

In his comments, Joe Wise expressed concern about the condition of the 8th Parliament, noting that rather than focusing on its main responsibility of lawmaking, the House has often been distracted by trivial and unproductive conflicts.

The Deputy Speaker who doubles as the MP for Bekwai Constituency, specifically noted that the number of laws passed during this parliamentary session is significantly lower than in previous sessions.

He emphasised that the legislative output of the 8th Parliament has been conspicuously low, both in terms of major laws and smaller legislative instruments.

He stressed that the output of the 8th Parliament has apparently been low when it comes to making major laws and smaller legislative instruments.

“Let me say that I am disappointed in the eighth Parliament, generally. I said the other time that we have done very little in legislation. You can just take the number of laws and smaller legislations we have done. We have wasted so much time on inconsequential things, inconsequential matters. Our main job is making laws.

“You go and take the number of laws we have made in the last four years and compare with the other Parliaments and you see that the eighth Parliament has been the least.

“It has been full of controversy. Matters that previously we used to sit down and discuss and overcome and do, now we take them into fisticuffs and that is most disappointing to me,” he added.
