The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has now become the majority in Parliament after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, declared four seats vacant.
This shift occurred during a session in Parliament on Thursday, October 17, following a petition from former NDC Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu.
The Speaker’s decision affected three New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs and one NDC MP.
Those affected include Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah from Amenfi Central, Andrew Amoakoh Asiamah of Fomena (an Independent MP), Kojo Asante of Suhum, and Cynthia Morrison of Agona West.
According to Speaker Bagbin, once the MPs were confirmed to be running as independents, they no longer had the right to stay in Parliament under their current parties.
This ruling means that the NDC now holds 136 seats, surpassing the NPP’s 135, giving the NDC the majority in Parliament. This marks a significant change in Ghana’s political landscape.
